The 5 Major Doshas in Kundli and How to Overcome Them

Mangal Dosha, Kaal Sarp Dosha, Pitra Dosha — these terms can seem alarming. Learn what they truly mean and the powerful remedies to neutralize their effects.

The word "Dosha" alarms many people the moment they hear it in a Kundli reading. But a Dosha is not a curse — it is simply a planetary placement that creates friction in a specific area of life, and every Dosha in Vedic astrology has a corresponding remedy. Here are the five most commonly discussed doshas and what they actually mean.

1. Mangal Dosha (Kuja Dosha)

Formed when Mars (Mangal) is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the Ascendant or Moon. It is most often discussed in the context of marriage compatibility, as it is believed to create friction, temper, or delay in married life.

  • Not every Mangal Dosha is equally strong — its intensity depends on the sign, degree, and aspects on Mars.
  • Cancellation rules (Mangal Dosha Bhanga) exist for many combinations and must be checked chart-by-chart.
  • Common remedies: Kumbh Vivah (symbolic marriage ritual), chanting the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays, and donating red lentils or jaggery.

2. Kaal Sarp Dosha

Occurs when all seven classical planets are hemmed between Rahu and Ketu (the lunar nodes) on one side of the chart. It is associated with a feeling of being "stuck," delayed success despite hard work, and recurring obstacles.

  • There are 12 types of Kaal Sarp Dosha depending on which houses Rahu and Ketu occupy — each manifests differently.
  • Remedies include worshipping Lord Shiva, performing Nag Puja on Nag Panchami, and specific Rahu-Ketu mantra japa.

3. Pitra Dosha

Linked to unresolved karmic debts toward ancestors, often indicated by afflictions to the Sun or 9th house from malefic planets like Rahu, Saturn, or Ketu. Associated with delays in progeny, health struggles, or a sense of family disharmony.

  • Traditionally addressed through Shraddha rituals, Pind Daan, and feeding Brahmins or the needy on Amavasya (new moon).
  • A precise chart reading determines whether Pitra Dosha is genuinely present, since afflicted 9th houses can have other causes too.

4. Shani Dosha (Saturn Afflictions)

When Saturn is weak, debilitated, or heavily afflicted, it can manifest as chronic delays, health issues related to bones and joints, and periods of isolation — especially during Sade Sati or Shani Dhaiya.

  • Remedy: Saturday fasting, chanting "Om Sham Shanicharaya Namah," donating black sesame seeds and mustard oil.

5. Grahan Dosha (Eclipse Dosha)

Formed when the Sun or Moon is closely conjunct Rahu or Ketu, associated with clouded judgment, health sensitivity, or recurring confusion in decision-making.

  • Remedy: Worship of Lord Vishnu (for Sun-Rahu) or the Moon deity (for Moon-Ketu), fasting on eclipse days, and specific gemstone therapy only after verification.

The Most Important Point

A Dosha is not a life sentence. Its real strength, and whether it is even active in your specific chart, depends on exact degrees, aspects, and cancellation combinations that only a proper Kundli calculation can reveal. Many people carry unnecessary fear about doshas that, on close inspection, are weak or fully cancelled in their chart.
